The European Commission decided Wednesday to send a second warning to eight member states for their failure to adopt national legislation on penalties against maritime pollution by ships.
The eight countries are Britain, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Malta and Portugal.
The commission, the executive body of the European Union (EU), decided to act as the eight member states had not fully transposed a 2005 directive into national law.
The directive was aimed at improving maritime safety and enhancing the protection of the marine environment from pollution by ships. The directive should have been fully transposed into national law by April 1, 2007.
The warning is the last step before bringing these member states to the European Court of Justice. Source: Xinhua
