The European Parliament on Thursday voted overwhelmingly for the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and asked Poland and Britain to apply it ultimately.
The house approved the charter with 534 votes in favor, 85 against and 21 abstentions.
It also adopted an amendment with 477 votes in favor, 106 against and 35 abstentions urging Britain and Poland to make every effort to arrive, after all, at a consensus on the unrestricted applicability of the charter.
In the new Lisbon Treaty, which is to replace the failed EU constitution, Poland and Britain have both fought for the inclusion of a protocol to prevent the application of the charter either by the European Court of Justice or their own courts in their countries, fearing that the EU court may force changes in their labor laws.
