The UN Security Council is set to meet in an emergency session later on Thursday to discuss the situation in Pakistan following the killing of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, a UN spokeswoman said.

Marie Okabe said the 15-member council would meet at noon (1700 GMT) to assess the situation in the country.

Bhutto, Pakistan's former prime minister, was killed Thursday evening in a bomb attack during her election rally at the Liaquat Bagh park in Rawalpindi, some 30 km south from Islamabad.
