Thailand's former foreign minister Surin Pitsuwan will formally take up his post as secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Monday, the state-run Thai News Agency reported Sunday.
The report said about 150 senior ASEAN officials and diplomats would witness the event.
Surin, a former member of the Democrat Party, Thailand's oldest political party, will become the second Thai citizen to take up the ASEAN secretary-general post after Pan Wannamethee, currently secretary-general of the Thai Red Cross.
However, Surin will be the first Thai politician to hold the ASEAN secretary-general post. He is believed to receive better trust from international organizations and this would assist ASEAN to advance, said the news agency.
ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Leaders of the 10 member nations in 2007 adopted an ASEAN Charter and pledged to ratify it as soon as possible, and this will further boost the role of the ASEAN secretary-general after it was implemented. Source:Xinhua
