The UN Security Council on Monday strongly condemned the attempted assassination on Timor-Leste's President Jose Ramos-Horta and called on the Timorese people to remain calm and exercise restraint.
The council condemned "in the strongest possible terms" the attack on Ramos-Horta and another attack on the convoy of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, which "represent an attack on the legitimate institutions of Timor-Leste," said a statement read out by Panama's UN Ambassador Ricardo Alberto Arias, the council's president for this month.
The 15-member body called on the government "to bring to justice those responsible for this heinous act," and urged "all Timorese parties to cooperate actively with the authorities."
The council further called on all Timorese "to remain calm, exercise restraint and maintain stability" and urged all parties in Timor-Leste to "resolve any disputes through political and peaceful means within the framework of its democratic institutions."
"The Security Council reaffirms its full support to the government and people of Timor-Leste in their continued efforts to strengthen democracy and ensure public security and maintain stability in their country," the statement said.
The Timorese president, who was shot at his residence and underwent surgery before being sent to Australia for further treatment, was described as being in "stable but serious" condition, according to a report by the UN Mission in Timor-Leste.
