The UN Security Council expressed "great concern" at targeted assassinations in Lebanon and elsewhere on Thursday, the third anniversary of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
The council expressed "its great concern of any target assassinations that have been committed in Lebanon or in any other place," said Panama's UN Ambassador Ricardo Arias, the 15-member body's president for this month.
The council also expressed "great concern for the institutional in stability in Lebanon, the importance for the Lebanese people to reach an agreement and understanding on the differences," he added.
In a statement issued earlier in the day, UN chief Ban Ki-moon paid tribute to the former Lebanese prime minister and called for "national reconciliation" of Lebanese parties.
Hariri was assassinated along with 22 other people on Feb. 14, 2005 in a car bomb attack in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The United Nations, which is still leading an investigation into his assassination, has ordered the establishment of a special tribunal to try the suspects.
