The UN Security Council is to hold emergency consultations on Kosovo at the request of Russia, a UN spokesperson said Sunday.
The session was to be held at the UN Headquarters at around 3:00 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) Sunday, hours after Kosovo's parliament officially declared independence from Serbia, with support from the United States and the European Union.
Russia, a staunch ally of Serbia, has said that a unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo's ethnic Albanians would be illegal and nullified by the United Nations.
The 15-member body held an urgent meeting Thursday at the request of Serbia and Russia to discuss the expected Kosovo independence but failed to reach a common ground.
