Cooperation talks between the European Union (EU) and Russia will achieve tangible results only if energy issues between the two sides are resolved, visiting EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said here Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference after meeting with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Solana reiterated that the energy issue is key in talks on a new partnership and cooperation agreement with Russia.
Although the Polish government promised Tuesday to drop its veto on starting talks, a handful of issues including energy are still shadowing the launch of the negotiations, local media said.
The EU depends on Russia for a quarter of its gas supplies. With gas disputes running high between Russia and Ukraine in recent years, the EU has also suffered supply reductions, prompting the bloc to diversify its energy sources while seeking cooperation with Russia. Source: Xinhua
