The 35th Meeting of Energy Working Group of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) will be held during Mar. 3-7 in Peru's Iquitos, the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines announced Wednesday.
The meeting is one of the main international events that will be held within the framework of the APEC leaders' meeting scheduled for November.
Peruvian Vice Minister of Energy and Mines Pedro Gamio said the meeting will discuss such issues as energy security, energy efficiency and savings plans, clean and renewable energy and the mechanism of clean development.
"APEC's main countries are diversifying their energy, promoting renewable energies ... and decreasing their oil dependency," said Gamio.
Nuclear energy will also be discussed due to its role in fighting climate change, said Gamio.
"This forum will undoubtedly grant a special opportunity to promote Peru and its main energy projects in an important capital market represented by APEC with over 50 percent of the world's Gross Domestic Product," said Gamio.
So far 81 delegates from 12 economies have registered to attend the meeting, including Australia, Brunei, Chile, China, South Korea, the United States, Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.
Accounting for around 60 percent of world energy demand, the APEC region is a net energy importer as its aggregate annual consumption of energy exceeds annual domestic production, according to APEC's official website.
Since its inception in 1989 in response to the growing interdependence among Asia-Pacific economies, APEC has become a major regional forum acting as the primary regional vehicle for promoting open trade and practical economic and technical cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
APEC currently has 21 members: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, China's Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam. The chairmanship rotates among members, with Peru holding the chair this year. Source: Xinhua
