NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has congratulated Dmitriy Medvedev's election as Russia's new president, said the NATO chief on Tuesday.
"Following the presidential elections held last Sunday in Russia, I have sent a letter of congratulations to the President-elect, Mr. Dmitriy Medvedev," says a brief statement from the NATO chief.
"NATO looks forward to working with the new president, within the NATO-Russia Council, to strengthen our practical cooperation, and to step up our dialogue," it adds.
