The Cairo-based Arab League (AL) condemned here Wednesday Israel's recent offensive in the Gaza Strip as "war crimes and crimes against humanity."
The Gaza offensive shows that Israel was not responding to peace efforts and understandings of the U.S.-sponsored Mideast peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland in November 2007, AL said in a draft resolution for its council meeting at foreign ministerial level
The pan-Arab body, meanwhile, called for the resumption of the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, end of all settlement activities in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem, and reaching an extensive peace deal for the establishment of a Palestinian state by the end of this year.
Earlier, AL Secretary General Amr Moussa spoke at the meeting and called on the UN Security Council and the international quartet committee to live up to responsibilities for the Palestinian territories and stop their double-standard approach in dealing with the Palestinian cause.
Israel's criminal offensive in Gaza indicates its policy against the Palestinian people based on genocide and cleansing, which should be strongly confronted, urged the AL chief.
Moussa, meanwhile, called for Palestinians' clear and deeply-rooted national reconciliation, saying it is the hope of Arab nations to overcome the current crises and the real key to preserve Arab security and achieve prosperity.
Terming the Arab situation as very complicated, Moussa urged the Arab nations not to accept realities that contradict Arab interests.
