European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso here Thursday called on trade unions and business leaders to do more to contribute to a "modern and efficient" Europe and play a full role in decisions on climate change and energy use.
Barroso made the call after the Tripartite Social Summit for Growth and Employment, which brought together leaders from the EU, trade unions and commerce.
"We are aiming for a modern, efficient Europe, a Europe that is able to rise to the challenges of globalization, a Europe that is socially coexistent, and environmentally sustainable," said Barroso at a press conference after the meeting.
The goal could not be realized without the participation of the EU citizens, and "I invite the social leaders to play the full role on emergent decisions and discussion on climate change and energy use," he said.
There has been broad support so far from employees and trade unions for the strategy, said Barroso.
He said the European Commission is preparing proposals on how social partners can get more involved in fighting climate change and smart energy usage.
The social summit is held at least once a year, and is a traditional event prior to the regular spring EU summit.
