UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Wilfried Lemke of Germany as his Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, replacing Adolf Ogi of Switzerland who completed his work at the end of December 2007, Ban's spokesperson said Tuesday.
Throughout his 25 years of professional experience in both sport and politics, Lemke "has been a dedicated advocate for the importance of sport in education and society," Michele Montas said.
Lemke, who holds a degree in sport and educational sciences from Hamburg University, will serve at the level of under-secretary-general on a 1 U.S. dollar-a-year salary.
As special adviser, Lemke is tasked with leading and coordinating the efforts of the UN system to promote understanding and support for sport as an instrument for development and peace.
The UN Office on Sport for Development and Peace is based in Geneva, and a liaison office is to be located within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) at UN Headquarters in New York.
