The European Commission said on Friday that it sees on reason for a ban of Mozzarella cheese from Italy as the latter has taken further measures to stop dioxin contaminated products from entering the market.
"The commission is satisfied with the progress made and continues its intensive contacts with the Italian authorities. Taking into account the information given by the Italian government today there is no reason for further action at European Union (EU) level," said the commission in a statement.
The Italian health authorities assured the commission on Friday that they are taking further measures.
Controls in the southern Campania region, where dioxin contamination has been found, have been intensified, said the commission, the executive body of the EU.
Further inspections are carried out in the establishments where dioxin was found with the purpose of trace-back and recall action, which has already begun, it was told.
The commission asked Italy to take urgent measures to contain the contamination and threatened to take action at EU level should Rome fails to respond positively. Source: Xinhua
