The UN Security Council voted on Monday to extend for nine months the arms embargo on militias and rebel groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Unanimously adopting resolution 1807, the 15-member council decided to extend until the end of this year the arms embargo as well as the mandate of the group of experts monitoring the embargo on the DRC.
The resolution, however, added that arms sanctions will no longer apply to providing arms to the Congolese government's military activities.
The council also decided to maintain other sanction measures, including a travel ban and an assets freeze on those who violate the embargo, until at least 31 December.
The embargo was first imposed in 2003 amid concerns that the growth and trafficking of arms was serving to fuel and exacerbate conflicts across the Great Lakes region.
