European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso Wednesday welcomed the approval of the Lisbon Treaty by the Polish parliament, saying he was "delighted" by the move.
"I am delighted by the vote, which shows that the Treaty unites more than it divides and is subject to common agreement by both the Polish government, the president and among most members of the parliament as well," said Barroso in a statement.
The Polish senate voted 74-17 Wednesday to adopt the Treaty after the lower house of the parliament voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to endorse the document.
"This vote symbolizes Poland's confidence in our common European project, and shows that she wants to play an active part in building a Europe which is strong, democratic and efficient, and where its citizens can live in security, peace and prosperity," he added.
Poland became the seventh European Union (EU) member state to ratify the Lisbon Treaty, the new treaty for the EU which was signed by EU leaders last December in replacement of the defunct EU constitution.
The other six countries are Hungary, Slovenia, Malta, Romania, France and Bulgaria.
