NATO Wednesday launched its own online television channel at the summit in Bucharest, Romania, in a bid to increase publicity of the alliance's operations.
The channel will be publicly accessible and media organizations can download broadcast quality video from the website.
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen officially launched the new channel in Bucharest.
Scheffer said NATO was "stone age" in terms of video when he became secretary general in 2004.
"We had almost no ability at NATO to gather video in a systematic way, to send it from the field and to get it to the public through TV or through the web," he said.
He said the new channel is a significant step forward to improving NATO's visibility.
Rasmussen, whose country funded the channel, said NATO needs to take up the media challenges of the 21st Century.
The media environment has changed profoundly over the past years, both in terms of technology, speed, accessibility and audiences, he said.
"It (the channel) will enable NATO to provide regular news updates and video reports from the different regions where NATO is engaged," he said.
The channel will feature stories primarily from Afghanistan at the moment. It may not initially be able to feature new stories on daily basis.
