UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was deeply concerned about the global rise in food prices, UN spokesperson Michele Montas said Monday.
Montas told reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York that Ban has been watching the rise in global food prices with "deep concern."
She noted that the reasons for the shortages are many and cannot be solely ascribed, as some do, to a simple trade-off between biofuels and agriculture, though this may indeed be a factor.
"We must take steps, beginning now, to assure the world's food security," Montas said, emphasizing the need to first meet urgent humanitarian needs and to then increase production, with a longer aim of increase in production. Source:Xinhua
