UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on Monday for collective efforts for incremental progress in deadlocked disarmament arena.
In his remarks to the opening of the annual three-week session of the UN Disarmament Commission, which performs a unique function in the UN disarmament machinery, serving as a deliberative body that reports to the General Assembly, Ban said "incremental progress in this institution can have positive spillover effects across the UN's disarmament machinery."
He asked delegations to be flexible and not to insist on achieving all of their objectives to break the deadlocks.
Ban renewed his call with a greater sense of urgency, stressing that, in shaping international peace and security, the secretariat, member states and civil society must reinvigorate collective efforts to reach shared goals in disarmament and non-proliferation.
The UN chief urged all nations to take very seriously the challenges posed by weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear arms, including risks from their continued existence, their geographical spread, and the possibility that they could fall into the hands of terrorists.
