UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned on Thursday attack on the hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban said he is very troubled by Wednesday's attack on UN-AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) police personnel outside of the Zam Zam camp for internally displaced persons near El Fasher.

He condemned "in the strongest terms" such attacks on UNAMID personnel who have been deployed to Darfur to contribute to peace and stability.

Ban called on both the Government of Sudan and the rebel movements to ensure that UNAMID is able to fully implement its mandate.

According to the statement, one UNAMID police officer was injured and two UN vehicles were hijacked by four unidentified gunmen in the incident.

The United Nations and the African Union have deployed UNAMID to try to quell the violence and the humanitarian suffering but so far fewer than 10,000 personnel out of the 26,000 expected at full deployment are in place.
