UN special envoy on name talks between Macedonia and Greece Matthew Nimetz is launching new efforts to help resolve the dispute, news reaching here from Skopje said on Saturday.

Nimetz will visit Skopje on Thursday and then head to Athens on Friday. He is not expected to come up with any new proposal for resolving the name dispute on this trip.

Instead, he is trying to sound out the positions of both countries after Athens vetoed Macedonia's accession to NATO at the alliance's summit in Romanian capital of Bucharest over a 17-year-long name dispute between the two countries.

Greece maintains that plain "Macedonia" implies a territorial ambition over its own northern province also called Macedonia.

Greece insists that its northern neighbor should call itself something like "Upper" or "New" Macedonia in stead of the "Republic of Macedonia."

Macedonian lawmakers voted on Friday night to dissolve parliament and hold early elections amid the row with Greece over the country's name.

Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski has warned that early elections could further harm Macedonia's NATO and EU bid.

"There will always be time for elections, but the historic opportunity for crucial decisions will knock only once," Crvenkovski said.
