UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the delayed release of the March 29 election results in Zimbabwe.

"Absent a transparent solution to this impasse, the situation could deteriorate further with serious implications for the people of Zimbabwe," Ban told a high-profile Security Council meeting on peace and security in Africa.

"If there is a second round of elections, they must be conducted in a fair and transparent manner, with international observers," he said.

The secretary-general urged leaders of the Southern African Development Community to continue their efforts to resolve the issue, adding that the United Nations "stands ready to provide assistance in this regard."
