UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pledged on Monday the world body's urgent assistance to Myanmar which has been hit hard by a devastative cyclone.
"I am very saddened (that) the Myanmar people have been struck by this cyclone," he told reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York.
"The United Nations will do whatever it can do to provide urgent humanitarian assistance," he said.
Ban said the UN is still not sure of the total extent of damages and casualties because of the lack of communications and information.
"But I am very much alarmed by the incoming news that the casualties have risen to more than 10,000 people already, according to the Myanmar Foreign Ministry announcement," he said.
He said his Chef de Cabinet Vijay Nambiar is meeting Myanmar's UN ambassador to discuss what the UN can help.
The UN chief said he have already mobilized the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination team to find out what the UN can do.
"The United Nations is very much committed to actively assisting the Myanmarese people," he added.
