UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday expressed deep concern about reports of rising violence and intimidation in Zimbabwe.
"I am deeply concerned at reports of rising levels of violence and intimidation within Zimbabwe," Ban told reporters at the UN Headquarters.
He said he has been "very closely consulting with African leaders" on how to resolve the country's election dispute.
These leaders include the chair of the African Union, President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, and Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa, who is now the head of the Southern Africa Development Community.
He said he has been constantly following and monitoring the situation and discussing with the leaders on how the United Nations and the African Union together can help the Zimbabwean situation "reach a very harmonious and credible way."
Ban urged the Zimbabwean authorities to "take care of all humanitarian situations caused by this political and violent situation," and expressed hope that the African leaders "will take due efforts to bring to an early and harmonious resolution of this issue."
