UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the Myanmarese authorities on Thursday to focus on cyclone relief.
The secretary-general is "deeply concerned about the welfare of the people of Myanmar at this time of national tragedy," said a statement issued by Ban's press office.
The UN chief "has taken note of the government's decision to proceed with the constitutional referendum on May 10, while postponing it in some of the areas most affected by the cyclone," it said.
"Due to the scope of the disaster facing Myanmar today, however, the secretary-general believes that it may be prudent to focus instead on mobilizing all available resources and capacity for the emergency response efforts," it added.
A devastating cyclone struck some areas in southern Myanmar last Friday and Saturday, which has claimed 44,000 lives so far.
