A top European diplomat expressed here on Monday concern over the situation in Lebanon and support for its government.
"I am very concerned about the latest developments in Lebanon," EU Commissioner for External Relations and Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner said in a statement.
She said that she had talked earlier in the day to Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and heard "his views on the situation in the country."
She urged all Lebanese parties to co-operate to achieve the rule of law "as soon as possible."
"I reaffirm my support to Lebanon, to its legitimate government, to its army and to its institutions in charge of security and order," she said.
"There is no solution to the present crisis other than dialogue," she added, voicing the hope that "the efforts of the Arab League will contribute to find a compromise."
Deadly clashes between anti and pro-government supporters in Lebanon erupted Wednesday, one day after the Lebanese cabinet decided to cease the private communication network of the leading opposition group of Hezbollah and remove airport security chief Gen. Wafik Shqaier for alleged links to Hezbollah.
The clashes have left more than 20 people dead and dozens of others injured.
Arab League foreign ministers issued a statement after an emergency meeting in Cairo on Sunday, calling on all Lebanese to cease fire and end acts of violence.
