UN concerns growing violence in Chad

The United Nations refugee agency expressed deep concern about the growing violence in eastern Chad, where a refugee camp was attacked by Chadian militants earlier this week, said a report posted on UN website Friday.

Two gendarmes were shot dead and two others severely injured in the Wednesday attack, Jennifer Pagonis, spokesperson of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, told reporters in Geneva, adding that the three gunmen have been arrested.

The UN refugee agency is also alarmed that last weekend's attack by Darfur rebels on the outskirts of the Sudanese capital of Khartoum could further destabilize the already fragile security situation in the region, Pagonis said.

Eastern Chad is home to about 250,000 refugees from neighboring Sudan's Darfur region, with the majority living in 12 formal camps, as well as 180,000 internally displaced persons because of the ongoing troubles within Chad.
