UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday congratulated the Lebanese people on the election of a new president.

Lebanon's parliament elected army chief Michel Suleiman into the presidential office eight months after ex-president Emile Lahoud ended his term.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, the secretary-general expressed hope that the "historic event leads to the revitalization of all of Lebanon's constitutional institutions and a return to political dialogue within this framework."

He urged all parties to continue their efforts to enhance the country's sovereignty, stability and political independence in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions and the Taifaccord, which ended Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war.

"The secretary-general stands ready to support the Lebanese people as required and looks forward to working closely with the Lebanese president and the future government of Lebanon towards these goals," the statement said.

Since the presidential office became vacant in November 2007, there have been 18 failed attempts to conduct a parliamentary vote for president.
