UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday called on the world to put an end to the habit of producing carbon dioxide.
"Our world is in a grip of a dangerous carbon habit," Ban Ki-moon said in his message for World Environment Day, which is observed annually on June 5.
"Addiction is a terrible thing. It consumes and controls us, makes us deny important truths and blinds us to the consequences of our actions," he added.
Ban stressed that global warming was becoming the defining issue of the era and will hurt the rich and poor alike.
"Mitigating climate change, eradicating poverty and promoting economic and political stability all demand the same solution: we must kick the carbon habit," he stated.
World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
The theme of this year's observance is "Kick the Habit! Towardsa Low Carbon Economy."
