A UN Security Council delegation reiterated here on Monday support for Cote d'Ivoire's peace process and called on all political forces of the country to work for lasting peace.
Head of the delegation, Burkina Faso's UN Ambassador Michel Kafando, told reporters after talks with President Laurent Gbagbo, that the Security Council supports Cote d'Ivoire's peace process.
Kafando called on all political forces to participate in the peace process and urged the government to honor its promise to hold presidential election on Nov. 30.
Cote d'Ivoire has been undergoing serious political and military crises since former rebel group New Forces took control of the northern half of the country in 2002.
Gbagbo's initial five-year mandate officially expired in October 2005. However, delays in the identification process and disarmament of ex-combatants have led to several postponements of the election.
An agreement was reached in April between the government and the opposition factors to hold elections on Nov. 30.
Cote d'Ivoire was the last leg of the Security Council delegation's West Africa tour which also included visits to Kenya, Djibouti, Sudan, Chad and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
