The European Union's current account deficit expanded to 23.7 billion euros (35.6 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter of 2008, the bloc's statistics bureau Eurostat said Wednesday.
The deficit rose again after a marked decline in the fourth quarter of 2007, when it was only 2.8 billion euros (4.4 billion dollars), while it was 30.4 billion euros (47.4 billion dollars) in the first quarter of last year.
Though the current account continued in deficit, the EU registered a surplus in trade in services in the first quarter at 16.3 billion euros (25.4 billion dollars), down from 18.9 billion euros (29.5 billion dollars) in the first quarter of 2007 and 21.4billion euros (33.4 billion dollars) in the fourth quarter of last year, Eurostat said.
