UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday called for a global partnership to tackle the current food crisis.
Addressing an informal session of the UN General Assembly, Ban said that easy access to food is already beyond the reach of most of the world's poor at an affordable price.
He said that even in developed countries, the availability and cost of food now comes with an extra economic, political and social price.
"If we fail to act effectively now, we will see more unrest, the reversal of important development gains and the emergence of new humanitarian crises," he said. "Going forward, we need a global partnership for food."
He added that, during his visit this past weekend to Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah fully shared his concerns about exceptionally high oil prices and their impact on vulnerable countries and assured the secretary-general that he was ready to bring together relevant parties to find a solution.
The secretary-general said the UN has already taken some initial, positive steps, among them the establishment of a broad-based High-Level Task Force on Food Security to coordinate a coherent global response. Source:Xinhua
