The African Union (AU) Permanent Representatives Committee started its session in the Egyptian Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh on Tuesday to discuss political, economic, social and cultural issues.

Participants from 53 members of the pan-African bloc were expected to tackle the situation of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons in Africa, the Africa-European Union (EU) dialogue, progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals, as well as the implementation of the Plan of Action on Industrial Development in Africa.

They will also discuss AU's various strategic partnerships with some countries and regions including China and India, negotiations on economic partnership agreements, the ongoing Doha round negotiations within the World Trade Organization, soaring food prices and food insecurity.

The two-day session will be followed by a foreign ministerial meeting of the AU Executive Council on June 27-28 and an AU summit to be held from June 30 to July 1.

With the theme of "Meeting the Millennium Development Goals on Water and Sanitation," the upcoming AU summit is the first to be held in Egypt since the AU replaced the Organization of the African Unity (OAU) in 2002.
