European Union (EU) citizens are generally pessimistic about their lives in the future, shows a survey whose results were published on Wednesday.
Nearly half of the citizens surveyed believe that in 20 years' time, life will be worse than today. Only 38 percent anticipate that people's lives will improve.
Optimism decreases with age, but increases with educational attainment and degree of urbanization, according to the survey.
People in new member states are significantly more optimistic than people in the old 15 member states (EU15). Almost 60 percent of citizens in new member states expect their lives to improve, compared to only 32 percent in the EU15. Fifty-six percent of EU 15 citizens expect a deterioration in 20 years, compared to only 24 percent in the new member states.
