The Group of Eight (G8) summit will pay attention to the development of African countries by allocating specific funds for specific programs rather than writing off debts, the Russian presidential aid and representative for G8 affairs said Thursday.
"It is not the writing off of debts that is the point of the matter but allocation of specific funds for specific programs," Arkady Dvorkovich was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying.
Dvorkovich said that Russia allocates funds to promote such programs as making basic education more accessible and combating infectious diseases. Russia spent over 200 million U.S. dollars for these purposes in 2007.
"Two of the three days of the summit will be devoted to the discussion of questions in broader formats," Dvorkovich said. The debates on problems of African countries will, specifically, draw representatives of Algeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania.
Moreover, the summit will discuss the negative consequences of the climate change, problems and challenges of the global economy, including those related to high oil prices, instability of the world financial system and problems of the food markets. It will also give attention to topical problems of international security.
G8 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Britain, and the United States. The G8 summit will be held on Japan's Hokkaido Island next week.
