Leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized powers said here Tuesday that they will continue to support the Six-Party process towards the verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
"We are committed to resolving regional proliferation challenges by diplomatic means," said the leaders in a statement issued on the second day of the G8 summit in the northern Japanese resort of Toyako.
The leaders said that they will also support the eventual normalization of relations between the relevant Six-Party members through the full implementation of the Joint Statement issued by the six parties on Sept. 19, 2005.
Noting the progress made through the Six-Party process since last year, the leaders said that they welcome the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s provision of a declaration as a step toward the full implementation of the Joint Statement.
After the DPRK's demolishing of a cooling tower at the Yongbyon nuclear reactor and its nuclear declaration to China recently, the United States announced it would remove the DPRK from its list of state sponsors of terrorism within 45 days if the country met all its obligations under the six-party talks.
On Iran's nuclear program, the G8 leaders said that "we firmly support and cooperate with the efforts by China, France, Germany, Russia, the United kingdom and the United States...to resolve the issue innovatively through negotiation."
