The UN Security Council on Wednesday strongly condemned the attack on a convoy of the UN-African Union (AU) Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), which resulted in seven deaths and 22 injuries.
In a unanimous statement read out by Vietnam's UN Ambassador LeLuong Minh, the council president for this month, the 15-member body condemned "in the strongest possible terms" Tuesday's attack, the most severe on UNAMID since its deployment early this year.
The council stressed that "any attack or threat against UNAMID is unacceptable," and demanded that there be no further attacks.
Expressing "deep condolences to the families of the victims and solidarity to UNAMID staff," the council called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
The attack on the peacekeeping mission occurred on Tuesday when a joint police and military patrol was ambushed by unidentified militia in North Darfur. The attackers used heavy weapons and engaged the UNAMID convoy in an exchange of fire for more than two hours.
Seven of the wounded peacekeepers are in critical conditions, a UN spokesperson said.
