UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday called for concrete steps by Indonesia and Timor-Leste toward full accountability.
In a statement issued by his press office, the UN chief said he looks forward to the early public release of the final report of the Commission of Truth and Friendship (CTF) to the Presidents of Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
Ban expressed hope that "this process will be the first step towards achieving justice and reconciliation."
The secretary-general urged the governments of Indonesia and Timor-Leste to "take concrete steps to ensure full accountability, to end impunity and to provide reparations to victims."
On Tuesday, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed his deepest sympathy over the gross human rights violation prior to and after the 1999 referendum in Timor-Leste.
CTF, which was established on 2005 by both presidents, said in its final report that, Indonesian forces and officials were blamedfor supporting violences against Timor-Leste civilians in the chaos after 1999 referendum in Timor-Leste, and Timor-Leste was blamed for illegally detaining anti-independence supporters.
