The European Commission on Tuesday proposed removing restrictions on Bulgarian airlines.

The commission said it is transmitting a proposal to the decision-making Council of Ministers to lift the restrictions imposed on Bulgaria.

The issue is expected to be on the agenda of the justice and home affairs ministers' meeting on July 25. The European Commission hopes that a formal decision can be taken in early September.

Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007 but its carriers do not have full access to all EU airports owing to the restrictions.
