The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said that the return of Congolese refugees and displaced persons lacks tangible progress.
Eusebius Hounsokou, UNHCR country representative for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) said that there was little progress in the return of refugees from camps in Tanzania, according to the local media.
"There has been very little development in terms of return, with particular problems being reported in matters concerning schooling, healthcare and roads," said Hounsokou, who also noted that the refugees had grown used to being cared for by the UNHCR.
A tripartite technical committee bringing together UNHCR representatives from the DRC, Rwanda and Burundi will meet next week to discuss practical arrangements for repatriation of Congolese refugees in neighboring countries.
According to UN figures, the various countries, which share a common border with the DRC, are hosting more than 300,000 Congolese who have fled atrocities of war, particularly in the eastern part of the country.
Although much of the mineral rich central African country has remained peaceful over the recent past, the eastern part has remained volatile with skirmishes continuing between armed militias, foreign rebels and government troops.
