NATO expressed on Friday concern over the coup d'etat in Mauritania and hoped that the country can return to democracy and the rule of law.

"The seizure of power by force is to be rejected," said a NATO spokesperson, adding that the alliance welcomed the free and fair elections in 2007.

The spokesperson said the alliance continues to closely follow the situation in Mauritania, which is a member of the Mediterranean Dialogue of NATO.
