The UN Security Council renewed on Tuesday the mandate of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) for a further period of six months.
Unanimously adopting resolution 1831, the council authorized the mission to "take all necessary measures as appropriate" to provide security for key infrastructure and to contribute to the creation of security conditions for the provision of humanitarian assistance.
In the resolution, the council also urged member states to provide financial resources, personnel, equipment and services for AMISOM's full deployment.
It also called on African Union (AU) member states to help AMISOM "facilitate the full withdrawal of other foreign forces from Somalia and help create the conditions for lasting peace and stability there."
The council encouraged UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to continue to explore with the AU, in coordination with donors, ways of strengthening UN logistical, political and technical support for the AU.
In a resolution adopted in 2007, the council urged the AU to set up the force to support dialogue and reconciliation by assisting with the free movement, safe passage and protection of all those involved with the process.
