The European Union's French presidency condemned on Tuesday bomb attacks in Algeria as "wanton and barbarous terrorist attacks."
"The Algerian people are once again the victims of wanton and barbarous terrorist attacks," the presidency said in a statement.
It conveyed condolences to the victims' families and loved ones as well as to the Algerian authorities, reaffirming support for the Algerian authorities in their fight against terrorism.
On the same day, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy, said that she was "profoundly shocked by the horrific bombing of a police school which has claimed the lives of 43 people and wounded many others in Algiers."
"This type of act is barbaric and does not achieve any purpose," she said.
Algeria has suffered regular attacks blamed on Islamist militants linked to al-Qaida's north African wing, which has claimed several attacks, including a suicide bomb at a beach resort on Aug. 10 with the death toll of eight people.
In December 2007, the twin suicide bombings of UN offices and a court building in Algiers also killed some 41 people. Source:Xinhua
