The UN Security Council condemned on Tuesday the recent military coup in Mauritania which overthrew the government led by President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.
In a nonbinding presidential statement, the 15-member condemned "the Mauritanian military's overthrow of the democratically-elected government of Mauritania."
The council "opposes any attempts to change governments through unconstitutional means," the statement said.
The council demanded the "immediate release" of President Abdallahi and the "restoration of the legitimate, constitutional, democratic institutions immediately," it added.
The Mauritanian military staged a coup on Aug. 6 in Nouakchott, arresting President Abdallahi and Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghf, and shortly after announced the establishment of the State Council.
The Council later issued a statement, saying it would be led by Gen. Aziz, who was the former president's guard chief and was among the senior officers sacked by Abdallahi.
