The UN independent expert on human rights in Somalia has welcomed a peace agreement between the country's transitional government and an opposition group, according to a statement published on the UN Website Wednesday.
The deal signed Monday was a "hopeful signal" in the war-torn nation where lasting peace can start to take root, said Shamsul Bari.
Bari appealed for calm and the immediate implementation of the ceasefire agreement, and urged all parties to the conflict to abide by the provisions of international humanitarian law and human rights.
Under the Monday deal, which was brokered by the UN secretary-general's special representative to Somalia, the government and the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia agreed that they would stop inflammatory statements and commit themselves to ending all armed confrontations.
