UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is sending a letter of condolence to Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero after Wednesday's plane crash in Madrid, which killed more than 150 people, a UN spokesperson said Thursday.

"Mr. Ban extends his sympathies to the families of those who died in the crash, and to the government and people of Spain," UN spokesperson Marie Okabe told reporters.

At least 153 people died Wednesday after a Spanair MD-82 crashed on takeoff and burst into flames at Madrid's Barajas airport at 2:45 p.m. local time (1245 GMT). It was the worst air crash in Spain in decades.
