The UN children's fund (UNICEF) called on the Mexican government Wednesday to protect children and teenagers.
The organization is "on alert" due to the poor security faced by children, UNICEF representative in Mexico Susana Sottoli said here.
"We are alert due to the situation and ... we are ready and willing to see in what ways we can contribute to strengthen these protection measures," said the representative.
Sottoli's call comes as Mexico is witnessing a crisis of security. People are urging the authorities to curb the rampant kidnapping and murders in the country.
"It is fundamental, and it is an obligation of the society" and all the responsible ones to give protection to children in the country, Sottoli said.
Some 1.2 million children in Mexico do not attend school, as most of them have to work to support their families. There is also a lack of schooling in the country, according to UNICEF statistics.
