French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday called on world leaders to meet at the end of the year to study the lessons of financial crises that the world has experienced.
"It is the duty of the heads of state and government of the countries most directly concerned to meet before the end of the year to examine the lessons of the most serious financial crisis the world has experienced since that of the 1930s," Sarkozy told the opening session of the UN General Assembly's annual debate.
"Let us build together a regulated capitalism in which whole swathes of financial activity are not left to the sole judgment of market operators," he said.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy speaks at a news conference during the United Nations General Assembly at the U.N. Headquarters in New York, Sept. 23, 2008. Nearly 120 heads of state or government are in attendance for Tuesday's opening of the general debate of the General Assembly, and representatives of all 192 member states are expected to take the podium before it concludes next week.
