The 52nd International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference opened in Vienna, Austria, Monday, with the future role and development of the organization as its central theme.

Director of Chinese Atomic Energy Agency Chen Qiufa attended the conference as head of the Chinese delegation. In his speech in the general debate Monday, Chen stated the Chinese government's position on promoting the peaceful development of nuclear energy.

Chen said in the past year, the IAEA has actively responded to challenges concerning energy supply, environmental protection, nonproliferation, prevention of nuclear terrorism and nuclear safety in relation to the promotion of the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

He added that the IAEA should make full use of its professional advantage to promote the safe application of nuclear power and enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of its safeguards regime.

On behalf of the Chinese government, Chen extended "the most sincere gratitude" to the IAEA and its member states for their timely assistance at the time of the devastating earthquake which took place in May.

He also owed the success of the Beijing 2008 Olympics and Paralympics to the joint endeavors of the international community. The IAEA and its member states have provided technical support including nuclear security equipment, technology and training during the period, according to Chen.

At the conference, Chen also detailed the development of the nuclear industry in China. He said China is ready to share with other member states, developing countries in particular, its nuclear power development experiences and technologies.

Chen also invited senior officials to attend the Ministerial Conference of Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century, which is to take place in April 2009 in Beijing.

The 52nd IAEA General Conference runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 4 at the Vienna International Center (VIC). Attending the event are high ranking delegates from over 140 member states, regional and international organizations. A Chinese nuclear safeguard exhibition is also taking place at the VIC during the conference.
