At least 27 passengers were killed and 54 others sustained injuries in a road accident in eastern Pakistan on Friday.

A passenger bus bounding for Faisalabad city from Bahawalpur collided with a trailer which was coming from the opposite direction near Lodhran city in Punjab province, according to official Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

The police suspected that the driver of the bus had also died and the death toll would rise to 28 if his death were confirmed.

Rescue people and police reached the spot soon after hearing the news about the accident.

The APP quoted police sources as saying that over speeding and bus driver's negligence were responsible for the accident.

The police are trying to ascertain the identity of the bus driver and to locate him.
